The Three Churches in Stock. For Lent this year there are a series of reflections led by Fr Stephen Need on the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent book Love Unknown which is by Sr Ruth Burrows, a Carmelite nun and distinguished spiritual writer. The sessions run through the Tuesdays of Lent (starting this week) from 10am to 12 noon in the Rectory Hall. All Welcome. Christ Church have House Groups at various times. Please Pray for the Repose of the Soul of Teresa Gormley who has recently died. As a community we offer the support of our prayers and sympathy to Bernie and Ellen and all the members of the family at this time. Teresa’s Funeral Mass will be at St John’s this Friday 2nd March at 11.30am.
CAFOD Lent Fast Day: Friday 2nd March 2012. A child under 5 dies every 20 seconds because of diarrhoea caused by dirty water – CAFOD invites us to help people living without one of God’s most precious resources – clean water. For this Lent only, the Government will match £pound for £pound every donation given to CAFOD, giving us the chance to help thousands more people gain access to water and other vital services. Your fast day envelopes are available in church this weekend at all Masses and there will be a Retiring Collection for your offering next weekend. Please give as much as you can. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated in our Parishes on Pentecost Sunday 27th May. Candidates should be Year 9 or above. Would any young member of our Parishes who wishes to celebrate the sacrament please contact Fr David as soon as possible so that we may get an indication of those who might be interested.
Parish Finances –St John’s. After recent meetings of the Parish Finance Committee and the Parish Pastoral Council, we thought it would be helpful to our Parishioners to have a better idea of the finances of the Parish and how they operate In the meanwhile, the item ‘Needed’ now occurs just under the amount of the Offertory Collection. This item tells us what the average weekly running expenses of the Parish are. Fr David.
Gift Aid – St John’s. A completed Gift Aid declaration form enables the Parish to claim tax from the Inland Revenue on all collection offerings to the Parish – including the Heating Fund. The declaration form, available at the back of the church, simply needs your name and address. CTS Books. A new catalogue has just arrived – there are books for children, books about saints whose names we perhaps share and lots of information on all sorts of subjects. An order list is with the catalogue by the church door – but please do not take that away, we have only one copy! Payment on delivery.
Churches Together Lenten discussions. We will be meeting with the other churches at the U.R.C. church, 7.30pm for 8.00pm on the following Tuesdays in Lent: 28th February, 6, 13 , 20 and 27th March. Fr David will be giving the opening talk on 20th March on ‘Jesus’ Purpose’. The the session this Tuesday is ‘Jesus – His Humanity’ led by Rev. Trevor Jamison of the URC. Please come to these interesting and important evenings if you are able.
St John’s Social and Fundraising. St John’s Parish Quiz - The annual parish quiz is set for Friday 20th April (7.30 for a 7.45 start) in the Margaretting Village Hall. We have upped the price slightly this year to £6 per person and as usual it is “bring your own food and drink”. There will be the usual raffle so donations always welcome.
